Creative way to make printing practice fun

I am always looking for creative ways to make printing practice fun for kids.  I truly believe it is a skill that needs to be taught and practiced, so whenever I can I try to change it up so that it is not just paper and pencil tasks.  The kids tend to be more engaged and practice longer when it is not with a pencil.  My printing bags are used for just this purpose and my students love to use them.  Not to mention they are super easy to make.

Paint filled printing bags to practice sight words and spelling

Materials you will need:
  • Resealable bag (I used Ziplock brand)
  • Strong Packing tape or Duct tape
  • Paint or hair gel
  • Q-tips (optional)
To make the printing bags, I fill resealable baggies with paint or hair gel, usually just a couple squirts worth.  Then I tape the top closed so the kids can not open the bags (open bags=big mess).  The bags are then ready to use.   Kids can use Q-tips or their fingers to draw on top of the bag.  I like using the Q-tips because it helps build up those fine motor muscles as well.

I use these bags all the time with my class, especially during guided reading sessions or center activities.  It's something I can pull out quick and the kids love them.  We use them to practice pre-printing shapes, letters, sight words, spelling words you name it!

    1. Yep just paint! But you can add glitter if you'd like. I have also used hair gel too and it works as well, just make sure to use a darker color.

    1. Ohhh that sucks that shaving cream didn't work. I just use tempera paint. Even the cheap stuff from the dollar store works well. Good luck!

  8. so you use paint inside the bag and then do you use paint on the qtip for the outside?

    1. Yes you put paint inside the bag but then you can use a dry q-tip or your finger to draw on the outside of the bag. This way leaves no mess as you aren't actually touching any paint.

    1. You can use whatever size bag you want, I usually just use the sandwich size ones, but I have used x-large bags with some of my special needs students as they enjoy moving the paint around the bag. With a sandwich sized bag I just squirt in a couple squirts of paint probably about 3 or 4 tablespoons worth.
